“I became a supervisor because I wanted to offer the kind of space I wish I'd had starting out, and because I genuinely love watching people grow in the work. Starting out in private practice can be isolating, and supervision that stays only in the room with your clients misses half of what actually challenges counsellors. I'm here to sit with you through the client work that's sitting with you, and to help you think through what it takes to build and run a practice, not just what it takes to sit”
Most supervision stops at the clinical work. Mine doesn’t — because the challenges you’re facing as a counsellor rarely stop there either.
I use the STEP-UP framework, which brings together six areas: Support for you as a practitioner, Tracking your clinical work and client outcomes, Education and professional development, Performance and career goals, U — your own selfcare, and Practice — the business side of counselling that almost nobody talks about in supervision: insurance, fees, referrals, time management, and building a sustainable caseload.
My own clinical base draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and contextual behavioural science, combined with over 28 years’ experience in training, coaching and business consulting. That’s a combination you won’t find with most
How John works
I offer individual supervision, group supervision, and supervision on supervision. I work with counsellors who are new to the field, early-career practitioners, those who are experienced and building a specialisation, and private practitioners navigating what it takes to build and run a practice alongside the clinical work.
I draw on reflective practice, solution-focused approaches, person-centred ways of being, and STEP-UP. Reflective practice gives us space to step back and look at what's sitting with you from the work. Solution-focused and person-centred foundations help us stay grounded in what matters and what's already working, while STEP-UP brings structure to the practical and personal sides of sustaining your practice.
